Critical Points for Cover Letters
Following these simple suggestions may help you produce an effective cover letter:
- Make your cover letter concise. It should be one page with three to six short paragraphs.
- For easy readability, use 12 pt. book typeface and size. The face and size must match your resume, and the accompanying pieces, that you produce.
- Use the interviewer's name or the personnel manager's name in the salutation. Call the personnel office to ask for the exact spelling of these names. If you cannot find the personnel manager's name, use "Dear Sir or Madam".
- The goal of your opening is to capture the employer's attention. Use exciting language, sound enthusiastic and energetic.
- Mention the position in which you are interested
- Refer to a mutual contact, the name of the person who referred you for the position.
- Avoid, "I would be interested in anything you feel I'm qualified for", because this indicates an unclear focus or career goal.
- The body of your cover letter should highlight your experiences and accomplishments, not list the jobs you have held. That information is on the resume.
- Show you know something about the company. This tells them you are serious about working for them.
